ITU is committed to connecting all the world's people – wherever they live and whatever their means. Through its work, ITU protects and supports everyone's fundamental right to communicate.
ITU membership reads like a Who’s Who of the ICT sector. Unique among UN agencies in having both public and private sector membership, ITU has 193 Member States, including ICT regulators, leading academic institutions and some 700 private companies. ITU has three main areas of activity organized in Radiocommunications, Standardization and Development Sectors.
PIHR has become the specific member of ITU's Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D). ITU-D has a programme to offer entities interested in entering or expanding their presence in emerging markets, demonstrating global ICT leadership, learning how to put good policy into practice, or pursuing organizational mandate for corporate social responsibility. In an increasingly networked world, expanding access to ICTs globally is in everybody's interest.
ITU champions a number of major initiatives which encompass ITU's internationally-accorded mandate to ‘bridge the digital divide’, such as its ITU Connect events or Connect a School, Connect a Community. ITU also regularly publishes the industry’s most comprehensive and reliable ICT statistics.
